Florida State has received a commitment from Texas transfer running back Tre Wisner. The 6-foot, 194-pound back led the Longhorns in rushing yards the past two seasons. His most productive season was in 2024, when Wisner put up 1,064 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground while adding 44 receptions for 311 yards and a touchdown in the passing game. Last season, Wisner missed time due to injury, resulting in him appearing in 9 games and getting almost 100 fewer carries. Despite the reduction in carries, he still produced 597 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns with another 146 receiving yards and a touchdown on 22 receptions.
Scouting reports indicate that he may not have the most top-end speed or be the most powerful runner, but his patience, vision, and versatility are what make him special. Wisner’s 66 receptions also speak to his all-purpose ability.
Interestingly enough, Mike Norvell was the first coach to offer Wisner in high school, so there was a long-standing relationship between the two. Wisner was also impressed with new running backs coach Kam Martin, who has a history of productive running backs. He admitted that what Coach Martin did with RJ Harvey in Gus Malzahn’s offense played a part in his decision.
I know most people think FSU did not need another running back, which is somewhat true. Kam Martin and Gus Malzahn typically only feature 1-2 backs, and that is what we expected to see last year, but it was certainly not the case. If they actually hold to that this season, you don’t need a vastly deep rotation, but it is a long season, and injuries happen, so competitive depth is never a bad thing.
Additionally, Wisner is a veteran with proven production at the Power 4 level, which is very valuable. If you have the chance to land a running back who led a playoff team in rushing yards two years ago, you take him. Winser and Ousmane Kromah will make a nice 1-2 punch with Sam Singelton being the curveball off the bench. Tre is rated as the No. 3 running back in the portal by 247Sports. He has one year of eligibility remaining. Thanks for reading, and Go Noles!
