2026 Four-Star Legacy DB Jay Timmons Flips to FSU

Florida State remains red hot on the recruiting trail, landing their TENTH commitment this month after flipping four-star defensive back Jay Timmons from Indiana. The legacy recruit whose father, Lawrence Timmons, was an All-ACC linebacker for FSU before a standout NFL career, announced his decision on Tuesday.

Timmons, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound defensive back from Pine-Richland High School in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, had been verbally committed to Indiana since April. However, the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps and play football at Florida State ultimately earned the commitment flip.

The Seminoles’ pursuit of Timmons only recently heated up after he impressed at an elite camp on June 1st, earning an offer directly from head coach Mike Norvell. Defensive backs coaches Patrick Surtain and Evan Cooper played a pivotal role in his recruitment as well. This offer set the stage for a pivotal official visit to Tallahassee over the past weekend that solidified his decision.

“I’m back home, I was born for this,” Timmons said. He also told reporters that Florida State had always been his “dream school” and receiving an offer was “literally a dream come true.”

Here’s his scouting report from 247 Sports.

Ascending defensive back with NFL bloodlines and the positional flexibility to contribute at multiple spots along the back five. Starred on both sides of the ball for the 2024 WPIAL 5A champions, totaling over 200 yards of offense in the final two games of his junior year. Plays well above his 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame, will create turnovers by climbing the ladder at the catch point or delivering thudding collisions in the open field. Comfortable at this stage in press-man coverage as he maintains phase on the perimeter and also displays plenty of coverage savvy when operating as a zone defender. Put together one of the best defensive back workouts of the offseason and tested off the charts at the UA New Jersey regional camp in May, earning top performer honors. Likely going to find the most success shifting inside to nickel, but owns the mental makeup, athleticism, and physicality to play outside the numbers on Saturdays. Should be viewed as a potential multi-year starter at the Power Four level, a possible all-conference selection, and fan favorite if he can keep progressing. His commitment adds to an already impressive 2026 class for Florida State, which is now up to 19 commitments and is steadily climbing the national recruiting rankings. Timmons joins a talented defensive backfield group that includes Tedarius Hughes, Darryl ‘Tre’ Bell, and Sean Johnson. Thanks for reading and Go Noles!
