The NCAA Tournament bracket is set, and postseason baseball is once again headed to Dick Howser Stadium. Florida State earned the 10th national seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, securing a home regional for the third consecutive season. The Noles will host Coastal Carolina, Northern Illinois, and St. John’s beginning Friday, with game one against the Red Storm at 3 p.m. on the ACC Network. This group has been here before; they know how to handle it, but now the real test begins.
The FSU Resume
The Seminoles finished the regular season 38-17 overall and 19-11 in ACC play, their best conference totals since 2014, excluding the extended 2021 season. FSU went 27-4 at home in 2026, which makes hosting this regional an earned advantage. Eight ACC series wins, ACC Pitcher of the Year Wes Mendes (9-3, 2.57 ERA, 109 strikeouts in 84 innings), and a bullpen anchor in John Abraham (1.04 ERA in 43.1 innings of work) give this team a ceiling, but they will have to bring their bats, which have been inconsistent throughout the season.
The postseason pedigree under Link Jarrett is real. The program made it to the College World Series in 2024 and advanced to the super regional rounds in 2025, where they were one out away from a second consecutive trip to the College World Series. Now they’re back home with Omaha in their sights again.
There is one lingering concern heading in. FSU has dropped two straight, including getting knocked out of the ACC Tournament in their first game on a gut-punch moment. It’s all about getting hot at the right time, so the Noles need to shake that off fast and arrive at Dick Howser on Friday with short memories and long focus.
It is a little unfortunate. FSU was good enough to have the top-8 National seed conversation at least, and the difference matters. The top eight national seeds not only host regionals, but they also host super regionals if they advance. Given that FSU is 27-4 at home this year, that home super would have been a significant edge.
That said, let’s keep perspective. Last year, the Noles had to travel across the country to face Oregon State. This time, if FSU advances, they’ll be paired with the Tuscaloosa Regional, hosted by No. 7 national seed Alabama. A road super regional against the Tide isn’t ideal, but it’s manageable. The bigger concern right now is surviving this weekend.

The Field: #2 Coastal Carolina (37-21)
This is the team to watch, and I don’t mean that lightly. Coastal Carolina finished the 2025 season as national runners-up, going 56-14 under first-year head coach Kevin Schnall in one of the most remarkable debut campaigns in college baseball history, and they didn’t lose a step heading into 2026.
Coastal returns ace Cameron Flukey, the top-ranked pitcher in the 2026 draft according to Baseball America, along with key bullpen arms and key pieces of a lineup that proved it could handle the sport’s biggest stage. Flukey is as good as anyone FSU will see until they potentially get to a super regional.
The Chanticleers are not here to make up numbers. They’re a real threat to win this regional, which is exactly why FSU needs to stay in the winners bracket, handle their business on Friday, and hopefully, Coastal has to fight through the losers bracket if they stumble. This program has won a national title and played for one. They are no stranger to the postseason. Howser will be a decided home-field advantage, but the moment won’t be too big for the Chants.
#3 Northern Illinois (35-17)
NIU is a great story and the classic postseason Cinderella candidate. Northern Illinois won its first MAC title this season and set a school record with 35 wins. At the MAC Tournament, they outlasted Miami (Ohio) in a 15-inning marathon, 6-5, with their pitching staff delivering 18 strikeouts over the extended game.
Sophomore lefthander Carter Cox headlines their rotation as a legitimate arm. Give them credit for getting here, and don’t overlook them if they get hot. But FSU and Coastal are a class above, and NIU being paired against Coastal on Friday night (ESPN+, 8 p.m.) is honestly the best possible outcome for the Noles. Let those two beat each other up while FSU focuses on handling business against St. John’s.
#4 St. John’s (33-24)
The Red Storm head to Tallahassee riding the momentum of a Big East Tournament title. St. John’s secured a 5-3 win in the 2026 Big East Championship, marking a conference-record 11th title for the program. They’ve won conference titles before and know how to string together wins in tournament play.
The Johnnies won all seven of their Big East series this season, which speaks to their consistency. That said, at 33-24 overall, the overall résumé isn’t overwhelming, and FSU is the better team on paper. They are 102nd in RPI, and 0-6 in quad one games, but baseball is a crazy sport. The Noles need to treat this as a must-win and not get caught looking ahead to Coastal.
Final Thoughts
The roadmap is simple. Win Friday, stay in the winner’s bracket, and let Mendes and the rotation do their jobs. The winner’s bracket path allows Link Jarrett to deploy his starters with rest and purpose. If FSU drops a game and must play its way back through the losers’ bracket, the pitching math gets harder, and Coastal gets a potential shortcut to the regional final.
The wild card in all of this is John Abraham, who has been battling an apparent oblique injury. He has been arguably the best reliever in the ACC this season, and if he’s fresh and available, that’s a huge advantage for FSU’s pitching depth. There’s no indication he won’t be ready, but the word was he was not available for last week’s ACC tournament; it’s worth monitoring heading into Friday.
The Noles are 6-0 hosting the last two regionals. A starting staff built for this moment. A home record and raucous crowd led by the Animals that makes Dick Howser intimidating. Coastal is the obstacle, St. John’s is the opening test, and NIU is the wild card they need to not trip over. Do the job on Friday, stay in the winner’s bracket, and this regional is very winnable for the Noles. However, nothing comes easy in the postseason, as we just saw softball get bounced in their own regional. Gotta get hot at the right time, and the road to Nolemaha starts at home.
