Florida State is set to open spring camp on Wednesday, March 19th. Head coach Mike Norvell met with the media today for his pre-spring press conference at which time he announced that practices will be closed to the media, except for one scrimmage, this year. This is contrary to what he has done throughout his tenure at FSU. It appears he is trying to remove all distractions to focus on turning the team around this upcoming season.
This obviously presents a challenge in providing coverage of the team, but we at PTS are not credentialed media anyway, so it does not change much for us. After last year, I understand the decision to block out the noise and lock in. Whatever it takes to win!
Full statement on the decision to close practices below.
“As I evaluated every aspect of our program this offseason, I came to the decision that the majority of this year’s spring practices will not be open to the media. In my first five seasons here, we provided unmatched access to members of the media to observe practices during the spring, preseason camp and game weeks. I appreciate and respect the media’s role in telling the stories of the people in our program and keeping our fans informed. In a day and age where so many people have access to our players, I want to create an atmosphere free of outside perspectives during our time of preparation and development. The availability of our program in terms of post-practice media opportunities and individual requests for players, coaches and staff members will remain the same. This is not a suggestion that I think last season’s record had anything to do with media members observing our practices, especially after we won 19 games in a row in 2022 and 2023 with media at practice. However, this is the best decision for our program at this time.”
He also announced that Jayson Jenkins (DE), Conrad Hussey (S) and Shyheim Brown (S) will be out for the majority, if not all, of spring camp. Gunnar Hansen (OL) and Jalen Early (OL) will miss the first part of spring. He said others may be limited during the early part of camp as well. However, they are not expected to miss time during the season.
