The unfortunate part of starting 0-2 is that the effects can sometimes spread further than the playing field and that is what happened this week as the Seminoles lost two blue-chip recruits from their 2025 class. First, 4-star defensive tackle Myron Charles flipped his commitment to Texas who was coming off a massive blowout win over defending national champion Michigan. There was a belief that this flip had been in the works for some time and the bad start by FSU and the hot start by Texas appears to have been the catalyst that set the move in motion. It is already hard enough to compete against a school like Texas in the NIL era, so the on-field results didn’t help.
Next, we saw 4-star edge Javion Hilson back off his commitment to FSU the following day. While Hilson didn’t flip to another school, the de-commitment opens the door for programs like Alabama, Texas, and Florida, who are pushing to get him in their class. Hilson stated that he will be making his final decision in December and it’s hard to see the Seminoles get back in this one unless a massive turnaround happens unless there is just an NIL involvement, which is always a factor in today’s recruiting environment. Recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong has since placed a crystal ball in favor of Texas landing Hilson as well.
With these two de-commitments, Florida State’s 2025 class has fallen to 34th in the 247 composite rankings and now is left with just one defensive line recruit (4-star DT Kevin Wynn). The Seminoles need to start winning immediately to stop the bleeding from a recruiting standpoint, but this has already been an area that they have not excelled in. “Committed” may not mean what it used to, and while some of us feel that players who flip this easily aren’t the type of “program guys” you want, the truth is FSU needs all the blue-chip talent it can get to help return to elite status.
It’s also not a good look for FSU to be losing some of the top players in its class as we’ve seen happen in the past. We touched on this in our recent podcast episode along with some changes we feel are necessary to fix it. Florida State will have to return to the drawing board to find a replacement for the two big losses as the defensive line is a position of need in this class.
Despite the rough start that the Seminoles have gotten off to this season, they finally got some positive news on the recruiting trail this week with the commitment of 2026 4-star linebacker Izayia Williams out of Leesburg, FL. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound hybrid backer is viewed as someone who can also play safety and is ranked as the number 5 safety in ESPN’s recruiting rankings.
While 2026 is a long way away in the recruiting world, make no mistake, this is a big addition to the Seminoles’ future class. He is currently ranked as a top 100 prospect (96th) according to the 247 Composite rankings and is the number 7 linebacker and 16th-ranked player in Florida.
Previously committed to Syracuse, Williams backed off his pledge on August 4th and then took a visit to both FSU and Florida during week one before committing to the Seminoles. Williams spoke of commitment after the Noles rough start saying, “Every program has a bad game – that doesn’t determine what a program is really. When I talked to Coach Norvell, it was different than talking to other coaches. I could feel that difference. He wants me to be something great there someday.”
Although previously expected to continue with a schedule of additional visits this fall, Williams appears to be shutting things down saying that he no longer planned to take any trips after his commitment to Florida State. “I never really got this feeling with any other schools – it was like an iffy feeling for me. But this is different.” Williams joins a small but loaded class for the Noles in 2026. With 6 current commits in the fold, FSU’s class sits at number 1 in the 247 rankings.
