Recruiting Update: Gains and Losses for Tribe 25

Recruiting in college football is not for the faint of heart, especially if you’re an FSU fan in 2024. It’s been an up-and-down ride since the beginning of the season with mostly down over the past few months. With Early Signing Day approaching, moves are being made as classes take their final shape. Florida State’s dismal season means changes are inbound and this is a bad combination for its 2025 recruiting class and recruits look for certainty in uncertain times. With the results on the field and the firing of coaches, it is to be expected that decommitments will happen. FSU will have to lean heavily on the transfer portal this offseason to infuse its roster with talent. Tribe 25 has had a troublesome week, but it hasn’t all been bad, so let’s get caught up on the recent recruiting moves.

Noles lose two commits with others in jeopardy

Four-star quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. recently flipped to in-state rival Florida, but he was not the only FSU commit to flip to the gators. Three-star offensive lineman Daniel Pierre Louis also announced his departure this week. With UF’s announcement that Billy Napier is being retained for 2025 coupled with a big win over LSU, they have picked up momentum on the trial. Although he is still committed to FSU, it was also announced that four-star running back Byron Louis has locked in an official visit to Gainesville.

Four-star defensive lineman Kevin Wynn has received a flip projection to the South Carolina Gamecocks but remains committed to FSU at the time of writing this article. FSU has already seen other defensive line commitments flip elsewhere leaving Wynn as their last interior lineman in the 2025 class.

FSU flips a QB and lands a specialist

Once Tramell Jones decommitted from FSU, the rumors that they were likely to land four-star quarterback Carter Smith started to heat up. However, Carter recently received a projection to land at Wisconsin and is expected to cancel his upcoming visit to Tallahassee. The bad news just kept coming and it appeared FSU may not sign a quarterback in the 2025 class until out of nowhere, four-star Kevin Sperry from Denton, Texas announced he was flipping his commitment from Oklahoma to Florida State late Thursday night.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound signal caller is the 24th-ranked quarterback in the 2025 class per the 247 Composite Rankings. He is an Elite 11 finalist and has thrown for over 4,500 yards and rushed for over 1,100 yards in the past two seasons. Sperry has led his team to the second round of the Texas high school playoffs. There is a belief that this signals current OU interim co-OC Kevin Johns will reunite with Mike Norvell in some capacity on the new staff at FSU. Johns was Norvell’s OC at Memphis in 2019.

FSU also added a highly ranked specialist to the 2025 class this week with Brunno Reus announcing his commitment to FSU after being previously committed to USF. Reus is unique in that not only is he the #3 ranked kicker in the 2025 class, but also the #2 ranked punter. He is rated a 5-star in both categories per Kohl’s kicker ratings (Reus is a 3-star in the 247 Composite).

After all the dust settled this week, FSU 2025 class currently resides at 34th in the 247 Composite ranking with 13 total commits. There are likely to be more moves before Early Signing Day arrives on December 4th. Stay tuned to Plant The Spear for further updates. Thanks for reading and Go Noles!
