Florida State landed their second OL commit of the day as Bowling Green transfer Nate Pabst is headed to Tallahassee. The 6-foot-5, 315-pound graduate senior has been at Bowling Green since 2021. Pabst redshirted in 2021 and appeared in three games in 2022 before stepping into a starting role in 2023.
Pabst started at right guard in 2023, playing 518 snaps and posting a not-so-great 47.9 PFF grade. However, he has shown consistent improvement year-over-year. In 2024, his PFF grade saw a slight improvement to 58.9, but he allowed 6 sacks that season. To be fair to Pabst, 3 of those sacks came when he was playing out of position for the first time at tackle.
Pabst posted his best season to date last year. He was voted a team captain and earned second-team All-Mac honors. He took on more of a tackle role last year, playing 493 snaps at right tackle and 273 at right guard. Pabst cut his sack number down to just 1 last season, and his PFF grade improved to a solid 71.
Pabst brings a veteran presence with over 2,100 snaps of experience and played guard and tackle on both the left and right sides of the offensive line. This means he brings a level of versatility that can be very valuable to Herb Hand. He has shown to be a consistent blocker in the run and pass game with almost identical grades for both aspects. Pabst will have to get used to the inside zone blocking scheme under Herb Hand, but he will certainly be vying for a starting spot.
The biggest concern with every transfer from the G5 level is how they will translate to the Power 4 level. He faced Louisville and Cincinnati last season, giving us a glimpse of what it may look like. He performed well against the Bearcats but allowed the most pressure all season against the Cardinal. Still, it was only 4 pressures, and he did not give up a sack. Pabst will be a serviceable option for the Noles given his size, experience, and versatility. Thanks for reading, and Go Noles!
