It’s Talkin’ Season! What Mike Norvell said at ACC Football Kickoff

It’s talking season, and few coaches had more to answer for than Mike Norvell.

As he took the podium at ACC Football Kickoff 2025, the sixth-year Florida State head coach faced a barrage of questions about the past, present, and future of Seminole football. Just two years ago, Norvell was leading FSU to an undefeated regular season and an ACC title. Now, after a disastrous 2–10 campaign and sweeping staff changes, the tone has shifted from celebration to survival.

With new coordinators, a roster full of transfers, and a fanbase hungry for a turnaround, Norvell used the spotlight to reset the narrative.

“As we’re going into this off-season, it has been about bringing that daily edge, that desperation to go win on a daily basis, and in everything that we do, whether it is in the weight room, whether it is on the field, meeting room, or in the classroom. We wanted that sense of competition, and we wanted every day to see guys that are willing to rise to the challenge to be their best.” Mike Norvell made it clear this offseason wasn’t about living in the past; it was about raising the standard.

Norvell’s pursuit of that “daily edge” and “desperation to win” led to a calculated reset of the roster. Additions like Thomas Castellanos, James Williams, Duce Robinson, Squirrel White, Jeremiah Wilson, and a deep group of offensive linemen weren’t just talent grabs; they were, in many ways, cultural reinforcements. Norvell wasn’t just looking for potential (which was one of the factors that led to last year’s 2-10 record); he was looking for competitors who had produced. Guys who, whether in the weight room or the meeting room, would bring urgency, elevate the locker room, and push this team closer to its best.

“We challenged them at new levels that was probably some of the hardest workouts that we’ve had, and to see those guys embrace that literally with a smile on their face, knowing there was an opportunity to compete, to go get better, to see the newcomers, the guys that have been a part of the program, to see them all work together, to be able to set the foundation for what this football team is going to be, because all that we have is the season that’s ahead” Norvell said.

When looking back on last season, it was evident that a competitive mindset had been missing from the team. To such an extent that Norvell felt he had to manufacture much of the culture and mindset. “Ironically, probably a year ago, we did a lot more forced team building. There was a reason. And this year, I don’t think we had to as much,” Norvell mentioned to warchant.com‘s Ira Schoffel.

In an effort to rectify one of the most epic collapses in college football history from one season to another, let alone in Florida State Football history, Norvell felt that it needed to start with his lead coordinators on both sides of the ball. Alex Atkins and Adam Fuller are out, and former UCF head coach Gus Malzahn and former Nebraska Defensive Coordinator Tony White are now in. “Coach Malzahn and Coach White have done a wonderful job pouring into our players, being able to establish a foundation throughout the course of the spring and be able to build concepts and a plan in place that are built for the great playmakers that we have.”

In Gus Malzahn, FSU is getting a proven offensive architect who blends creativity with physicality and tempo with toughness. He’s coached Heisman winners, outmaneuvered elite defenses, and consistently built offenses around his players’ strengths. “I mean, having the opportunity to have Coach Malzahn come and be a part of our staff, it was special. It’s somebody that I’ve had a 20-year relationship with. All the respect in the world for the man, just the coach. He’s somebody who infuses confidence in everybody around him because he knows what he wants to do. He knows what he wants it to look like. It’s the belief that he’s able to pour into others, for what it takes on that journey.” Norvell said to Plant The Spear’s very own, Jesse Coger.

The man who will be pulling the trigger for Malzahn’s offense will be former Boston College and UCF transfer Thomas Castellanos. Castellanos looked to make a big splash as a Nole when he boldly said that the Crimson Tide won’t be able to stop him. Coach Norvell, while not directly responding to that comment, did mention that he “loves Tommy’s true confidence.” Norvell has mentioned to the local media in a private session that Castellanos has been doing a great job of working hard and trying to help the team be better.

Hard work is great, and not having to force team-bonding activities is a step in the right direction in getting FSU back to the nation’s elite. However, at the end of the day, it’s going to be about wins, and Mike Norvell knows that. “You don’t come to Florida State unless you’re willing to embrace the greatest of expectations, because there is a standard, and every day that standard has to show up. As we’ve sat there coming off a year that was a disappointing season, we had some real conversations. Ultimately, it wasn’t for everybody. The sacrifice, the investment, the work, the challenge, the confidence that had to be developed, because every team and every player that stands in front of you is going to tell you how confident they are. But for that confidence to be real, it has to be earned. There has to be the work. There has to be the truest belief of being able to embrace that in all things that make up who you are.” Norvell mentioned.
