FSU Basketball Secures First Commitment of the Luke Loucks Era

Florida State men’s basketball welcomed its first major addition under new head coach Luke Loucks, as Drexel transfer Kobe MaGee officially committed to the Seminoles. The announcement, made by MaGee on social media, marks a significant step for FSU as Loucks begins to reshape the roster in his inaugural season at the helm.

MaGee, a 6’6” sharpshooting guard from Allentown, Pennsylvania, brings a potent offensive skill set to Tallahassee after three seasons with the Drexel Dragons. In his junior season last year, MaGee averaged 14 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game while shooting an impressive 43.9% from beyond the arc on 5.7 attempts per contest. He brings a lot of experience to Tallahassee with 88 game appearances, including 33 starts at Drexel. MaGee started every game for the Dragons last season, averaging 33.6 minutes, and led the team in scoring. His performance earned him Third-Team All-CAA honors. With one year of eligibility remaining, MaGee will be counted on to make an immediate impact for the Seminoles.

The commitment comes on the heels of an official visit to Tallahassee, where MaGee chose Florida State over ACC foe Wake Forest. For Loucks, who was named head coach earlier this month, MaGee represents the first building block in what he hopes will be a roster overhaul to fit his new system. A former FSU point guard himself, Loucks has emphasized a vision of high-energy, modern basketball, and MaGee’s skill set aligns perfectly with that philosophy.

Known for his elite three-point shooting—ranking in the 97th percentile nationally as a catch-and-shoot scorer—MaGee also boasts the ability to stretch defenses with shots from beyond 25 feet, connecting on 20 such attempts this past season.

“They have a great group of guys over there, plus everyone is new, so we are all going to take that challenge together,” MaGee told League Ready in an interview following his commitment. “We are all presented with a unique opportunity, and opportunity is what I live for.” His words reflect a shared sense of optimism and ambition as FSU transitions into a new era. The new staff’s youth and NBA approach were selling points as MaGee enters his final year in college.

MaGee’s journey to this point has been one of steady growth. After coming off the bench during his freshman and sophomore seasons, he emerged as a full-time starter in 2024-25. MaGee put together four 20+ point performances last season, including a career-high 28-point game vs Colegate, where he drained 6 three-pointers on 8 attempts. He also shot 83% from the field in that game. It’s not all been perfect, though, but as he continues to grow and develop, his game has improved. Loucks spent most of his time in the NBA in player development roles, so he may be able to help MaGee take his game to the next level.

For Florida State, which is coming off a challenging season and looking to establish itself as an ACC contender, MaGee’s addition brings much-needed firepower to the perimeter. His 44% three-point accuracy (which would have led the Seminoles by a 2.5% margin last year) and ability to rebound from the guard position provide Loucks with a versatile weapon as he constructs his first roster.

This commitment comes as a statement of intent from the new head coach, who is wasting no time in leveraging the transfer portal to bolster the Seminoles’ lineup. MaGee was ranked as a top 5 shooting guard in the portal. The timing of MaGee’s commitment couldn’t be better with the transfer portal in full swing and FSU’s new staff having work to do with eight players exiting the roster, so far.

As the Luke Loucks era officially takes flight, Kobe MaGee’s commitment offers a glimpse of what’s to come for Florida State basketball: a blend of sharpshooting, tenacity, and a fresh start. Seminole fans are hopeful that this addition marks the beginning of a resurgence in Tallahassee. Thanks for reading, and Go Noles!
