Florida State fans received some positive news on the injury front Tuesday night as Head Coach Mike Norvell updated the status of projected starting defensive lineman Jayson Jenkins. Norvell stated that Jenkins had been getting some individual work and participating in a few competitive drills but was now expected to be a “full go” next week.
This is huge news as the former Tennessee transfer was expected to be a big part of this defensive front. He was sidelined after sustaining a lower leg injury while training during the off-season. Jenkins has been lauded for his relentless effort to rehab and get back by the beginning of the season, which had previously been in jeopardy.
Defensive coordinator Tony White described Jenkins as a 6-foot-6, 275-pound twitchy athlete who can play defensive end and tackle. The redshirt junior fought for snaps on one of the country’s deepest defensive line units in the country last year.
Jenkins saw his workload increase throughout the season, playing double-digit snaps in the final 9 games, including 28 snaps in their playoff game. Jenkins finished the season with an impressive 75.5 PFF grade. Getting Jenkins back for game one against Alabama is a massive boost for the defense.
Norvell provided additional updates, including that offensive lineman Jacob Rizy will also be a full go next week. The redshirt senior is the highest graded returning offensive lineman from last year’s squad (72.8) and is the projected sixth man at the guard position. Norvell said they had some guys with bumps and bruises and a few that could have probably gone but were held out due to precaution. Otherwise, he feels good about the overall health of the team through the first week of fall camp. Stay connected to Plant The Spear for more coverage as the season approaches.
