Reports broke Tuesday afternoon that Florida State has parted ways with junior safety Conrad Hussey, just weeks before the start of the 2025 season. A university spokesperson has now confirmed those reports.
Hussey, a former four-star recruit, arrived in Tallahassee with high expectations as part of the 2023 recruiting class. He made an immediate impact as a true freshman, appearing in 12 games and earning the team’s Defensive Freshman of the Year award. That season, he tallied 22 tackles, two forced fumbles, and an interception. His performance included a memorable play against Virginia Tech where he jarred the ball loose with a physical hit. All signs were pointing up for the young safety. I even had him on my breakout players watchlist for 2024.
However, Hussey’s trajectory stalled in his sophomore campaign. He looked nothing like the hard-nosed physical player that we saw the previous year. Tony White has not been shy that that type of play will not be tolerated under his watch. Reports indicate that he had fallen out of favor with the coaching staff and struggled with injuries, including a hand injury that sidelined him recently.
Hussey was expected to compete for a role in the new 3-3-5 defense, but coaches rarely mentioned him during preseason camp. The timing is particularly interesting as it follows comments from Coach White about certain experienced players needing to “step their ass up” and meet expectations.
While the details of his departure aren’t clear. If it was a lack of effort or commitment to the program, this is what needs to happen. FSU’s culture was second to none in 2023, but seemed to fall apart with individualistic attitudes last season. The new staff seems all business, and that type of attitude won’t be allowed to hang around and poison the well.
As for the safety position, FSU has plenty of options to overcome the loss of Hussey. He was not projected to be a starter this season, so it’s more of a hit to the depth/rotation than anything. Stay tuned for more updates from FSU. Thanks for reading and Go Noles!!
