FSU Signs Mike Norvell to a Multi-year Extension

Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell have agreed to a multi-year extension that runs through 2029 which would be Norvell’s 10th year at FSU.

Norvell, who took a pay cut at one point early in his tenure to help the athletic department during the pandemic, will receive a payout that averages 8.05 million per year making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the ACC. The salary will step up year over year with performance and retention bonuses included in the deal.

Per an ESPN report, his base salary will increase to $5.335 million in 2023, $7.335 million in 2024, and $8.585 million in the final year of the contract. He will also receive a $250,000 retention bonus if he is employed at FSU on December 31st of each year.

If Norvell were to leave for another job, his buyout would be $6 million in 2023, $4 million in 2024, and then decrease by $1 million per year.

The annual incentives in the contract that begin in 2024 include a $200,000 bonus for a New Year’s Six bowl appearance, $250,000 for a first-round College Football Playoff appearance, and $950,000 for winning the national championship.

When Norvell arrived at FSU he was tasked with rebuilding an FSU team that was in desperate need of new leadership. Under his direction and alongside new athletic director Michael Alford the Noles have made many strides in getting back to one of the premier programs in college football.

While the job is not finished yet, the program is headed in the right direction after finishing 10-3 in 2022, having a top 5 recruiting class in 2024, another huge portal haul, and rebuilt culture inside the locker room. This extension is another big step in bringing added stability to a program that hadn’t had much in recent years.

Michael Alford made the following statement on the extension via FSU’s official release.

“Coach Norvell has re-established a culture that the entire Seminole Family can appreciate,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford said. “We are proud of the way Coach Norvell, his staff, and his team represent Florida State University on and off the field. Under Coach Norvell’s leadership, we have experienced the highest grade-point average in program history multiple times, an unprecedented impact in our community, and drastic improvement on the football field through him establishing a foundation of unwavering standards in all areas. I’m happy that we are going to continue climbing with Coach Norvell for years to come.”

One point that AD Alford makes which stands out is the off-the-field aspect of what Norvell has done at FSU. There’s been no major disciplinary issues, an increase in team GPA, and the development of the Seminole scholar program to name a few. FSU is not only getting better but doing it in the right way.

Things may have not started off well early in his tenure but since flipping the roster and culture there has been marked improvement. FSU still needs to make some progress towards winning the conference and making noise on the national stage but 2023 looks as if it could be the year they do so. The Seminoles seem to have found their guy and this new extension will keep him in Tallahassee for the foreseeable future.
