Florida State has landed a commitment from Penn State right-hander Isaiah Shayter, adding another arm to Link Jarrett’s staff as the Seminoles reload their pitching for 2027.
Shayter, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound righty out of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, was thrust into the fire as a true freshman for the Nittany Lions in 2026. He tied for the team lead with 14 starts, holding down the Sunday role in a three-man weekend rotation. That tells you what Penn State thought of his stuff. A true freshman doesn’t get handed 14 starts unless the coaching staff trusts what’s coming out of his hand.
And what’s coming out of his hand is the entire selling point here. Shayter sits in the 93-94 range on his fastball with a four-pitch mix that’s touched 97, the kind of velocity that gets a bullpen coach’s attention regardless of the results column. Those results, to be honest, were rough. He went 2-7 with a 9.43 ERA across 48.2 innings, walking 30 while striking out 38. That’s the kind of freshman-year command trouble you see from power arms who haven’t figured out how to repeat their delivery yet, and it’s the number FSU fans should keep in context rather than write off the player over.

Shayter came out of Elizabethtown Area High School as a well-regarded arm, ranked as the No. 21 overall prospect and No. 2 right-hander in Pennsylvania by Perfect Game (Prep Baseball Report had him a bit lower on their board, so treat the exact number as a range rather than gospel). As a senior, he posted a 0.77 ERA with 107 strikeouts over 63 innings, numbers that backed up the arm strength scouts had been flagging.
The need for arms at FSU is obvious. The Seminoles are replacing a chunk of their pitching staff, and velocity like Shayter’s doesn’t grow on trees in the transfer market. He also arrives with three years of eligibility left, so this potentially isn’t a one-year rental. Jarrett’s staff has development time to work with here. Before you balk at the ERA of the past two additions (no pun intended), keep in mind that Wes Mendes had a 6.82 ERA at Ole Miss prior to transferring to FSU, and he turned out ok.
Nobody’s projecting Shayter into the weekend rotation on day one off a 9.43 ERA, but the stuff is real, and FSU’s bullpen needs all the help it can get. If the strike-throwing catches up to the velocity, this could end up being an under-the-radar portal pickup. Thanks for reading and Go Noles!
