Five Questions That Will Define FSU’s Fall Camp

As Florida State football kicks off fall camp 2025, the questions surrounding the Seminoles are as big as the opening opponent: Alabama. After an offseason full of transition, from roster additions to coaching changes, Mike Norvell’s squad enters August with both promise and pressure. With just weeks to prepare for one of the biggest openers in program history, here are five questions that will define fall camp in Tallahassee:

1. Is This Team Healthy Enough to Compete at a High Level?

You can’t win in September if you’re rehabbing in August. Health must be priority number one for Norvell’s staff heading into camp. After a bruising 2024 season that saw several key players miss time, FSU can’t afford setbacks. We saw a few key players held out of spring practice due to injury. Will those players be fully recovered by the fall?

One name to watch closely is defensive line transfer Jayson Jenkins, who was expected to play a pivotal role in this defense. Norvell mentioned that he was progressing at a better-than-expected pace and should return at some point during fall camp, but will he be ready by kickoff against the Crimson Tide? Some good news on the injury front that we obtained during ACC Media Days is that projected starters Richie Leonard IV and Squirrel White are 100% and ready to go.

2. How Quickly Can This Team Get in Sync?

New schemes. New players. New coaches. Same clock ticking toward Alabama.

Gus Malzahn is in as offensive coordinator, bringing with him a system that’s fast-paced and demanding, but effective. Thomas Castellanos, Duce Robinson, Squirrel White, and a reloaded offensive line add talent, but chemistry takes time. Defensively, the addition of James Williams and several young pieces will require strategic alignment and trust. Camp isn’t just about conditioning; it’s about cohesion. The quicker this group can learn to play together, the more dangerous they’ll be in Week one.

3. What’s the Mental Makeup of Mike Norvell Heading Into Year Six?

Mike Norvell enters his sixth season as a head coach who’s seen it all: the rebuild, the resurgence, and the reckoning. But 2025 isn’t about slogans or speeches; it’s about results. Fall camp will reveal whether Norvell can shift from “talking season” to “playing season” with urgency and confidence. The way he leads, in pressers, on the practice field, and behind closed doors will set the tone. This is a season where excuses won’t fly. It’s time to execute.

4. Who Will Be the Leaders Who Don’t Just Talk — But Actually Lead?

Norvell has said it himself: “Don’t just talk about it. Be about it.” And after losing veteran voices to graduation and the portal, FSU needs new leaders to emerge. Will it be a returning vet like Shyheim Brown? A breakout star like Jeremiah Wilson? Or maybe a transfer like Squirrel White who brings SEC experience to the locker room?

Darrell Jackson mentioned that the coaches have asked him to step up into that leadership role. That’s concerning to me, but I’m hoping it was a small nudge and not something they’ve dragged him into. I personally prefer players you have to say “woah” to and not “go” to!

5. How Will the Position Battles Shake Out?

Iron sharpens iron, and FSU will need every ounce of competitive fire to figure out who earns starting roles.

The quarterback situation seems clear with Castellanos likely QB1. The offensive line rotation will be fierce with a mix of returners and portal additions. The wide receiver room is deep, but sorting out who’s WR1, WR2, and the go-to on third down is far from settled. And on defense, the battle at corner opposite Jeremiah Wilson and the rotation at linebacker are must-watch.

For Mike Norvell and Florida State, the time for potential is over. Fall camp is where potential becomes proof — or a missed opportunity. As Norvell likes to say, “Don’t talk about it, be about it!”

Let’s see who steps up.
