Florida State added Eastern Carolina transfer tight end Desirrio Riles to its commit list on Tuesday afternoon. The Jacksonville, Florida native returns to his home state after three seasons with the Pirates. Last season, the 6-foot-3, 238-pound pass catcher hauled in 28 receptions for 362 yards and 2 touchdowns.
There are some positives and negatives to Riles in my opinion. He does bring over 1,000 snaps of experience, even if it is all at the G5 level. I’ve heard some positives about Riles from those who covered him at ECU. However, he has had a high drop percentage of over 11% the past 2 seasons. His blocking grades are also below average. On a game-by-game basis, they were all bad, but there were a few games that were pretty rough from a blocking standpoint.
Riles did haul in 6 passes on 8 targets for 49 yards against NC State last year, which is encouraging. The tight end position is not heavily featured in Gus Malzahn’s offense, so it may not have much of an impact on the outcome of the season, but with FSU losing Randy Pittman, Landen Thomas, Amaree Williams to the portal, and Markeston Douglas to attrition, FSU needed to add depth at the position. Riles was rated as the No. 23 tight end in the portal. Thanks for reading, and Go Noles!
