Florida State baseball continues to bolster its pitching staff with another significant addition from the transfer portal, as right-handed reliever Brodie Purcell has announced his commitment to the Seminoles. Purcell, a rising junior, comes to Tallahassee after two impressive seasons with the USC Trojans, adding a high-impact arm to Link Jarrett’s pitching arsenal.
A 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-hander from Aliso Viejo, California, Purcell established himself as one of the top relievers in college baseball during his sophomore campaign. He earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors after posting a stellar 2.11 ERA over 42.2 innings pitched. Purcell recorded 51 strikeouts against just 19 walks, holding opposing hitters to a paltry .177 batting average while collecting four saves. His freshman year in 2024 saw him make 23 appearances, pitching 29 innings with a 4.02 ERA, 31 strikeouts, and 17 walks.
Purcell becomes the ninth transfer portal addition for the Seminoles this cycle, with seven of those being pitchers, including 5 right-handers. This focus on pitching depth signals that FSU’s coaching staff understands the need to address what was a primary area of concern over the past few seasons. Not to mention, FSU has some holes to fill after the MLB draft, attrition and the transfer portal raided their pitching staff.
Purcell is an important addition for the Seminoles, who are aggressively pursuing talent through the transfer portal to make another run next season. A quality closer is something FSU has been missing. His ability to consistently get outs and limit damage, particularly in high-leverage situations, will be invaluable to FSU’s bullpen. This move, combined with other key pitching transfers like FAU left-hander Trey Beard, highlights Coach Jarrett and pitching coach Micah Posey’s commitment to rebuilding and strengthening the FSU pitching staff.
Purcell, a highly touted recruit from JSerra Catholic High School, has two seasons of eligibility remaining. His arrival is expected to make an immediate impact, providing a proven, high-caliber arm to the backend of the Seminoles’ pitching staff where it’s needed most. Thanks for reading and Go Noles!
