ACC announces new format for baseball championship tournament

Baseball season is closing in with opening day just a week away. As finishing touches are put on preparations for the upcoming season, the ACC has made a notable change in how it will format the conference championship tournament beginning in 2025. In the newly announced format, all 16 teams will compete in a single elimination tournament to crown the league champion. It will still take place over six days running May 20th – May 25th and be held in Durham, North Carolina this year.

Although every team will get a chance to compete, the top four seeds will receive a double-bye into the quarterfinals, and seeds 5-8 will receive a single-bye into the second round. Seeding will be based on each team’s regular season performance. The new format may appear to diminish the regular season to a degree, however, with a double-bye at stake, it would greatly benefit teams to grab one of the top four seeds.

This is welcomed change proposed by the league’s head coaches that will replace the previous double elimination format that featured confusing and unnecessary “pool play” games, which has been in place since 2006. This new format should greatly benefit teams as they won’t have to endure as much wear and tear before entering the postseason. The ACC had eight teams advance to the NCAA tournament and four made the College World Series in Omaha last year, including Florida State. This is a good move by the ACC in terms of how teams will battle for the conference crown without using all the gas in the tank before postseason play begins. Read the full release here.
