Florida State head coach Mike Norvell met with media members on Wednesday and provided an update on a few players who have been dealing with injuries. Thankfully, FSU has not had any serious injuries (knock on wood), but there have been quite a few small things that have limited several players throughout the early part of the season. Norvell provided updates on three players who are aiming to make a return in the near future (Squirrel White, Kevin Wynn, and Lawayne McCoy).
Kevin Wynn was one of the more highly anticipated freshmen coming into this season, but suffered a lower leg injury late in fall camp that has kept him from playing. In his presser, Norvell said Wynn is “getting closer” to making a return but isn’t expected to make that return this week. However, next week against UVA is a possibility, though. “He could get into that conversation. We’ll see how it goes.”
Squirrel White suffered a hand injury on a punt return against East Texas A&M. He was seen wearing a decent sized brace after returning from the locker room but did practice on a limited basis Wednesday. While he didn’t give a clear yes or no, he’s doubtful for this Saturday’s game against Kent State based on what Norvell said. To be honest, unless he’s 100%, there’s no point is risking him for this game. White is veteran receiver and a big part of this offense. Not to mention, FSU is a 44-point favorite over Kent State. He’ll be needed when conference play starts next week.
Lawayne McCoy has missed the entirety of the season and most of preseason camp with a knee injury. Norvell expects McCoy to be ready to play against Kent State, although he will be on a “pitch count.” It would be nice to get back a player that Norvell himself called a tier one receiver, especially with Squirrel White now dealing with his second injury since fall camp.
It’s a long season, and FSU needs a fourth receiver to step up. McCoy caught 6 passes on 10 targets for 52 yards last year as a true freshman. According to Norvell, McCoy is viewed as a versatile receiver who can play any of the receiver positions and is a deep ball threat (essentially a younger version of Squirrel White).
Norvell did not comment on James Williams, who has also been dealing with a minor injury, so I assume he’ll be available this week. FSU should win big on Saturday, even down a few starters. With conference play beginning on the back side of this game, health will be key.
Live game reps are important, but what FSU sees every day in practice is probably better than what they will see on Saturday. If there were ever a time to rest these guys, it’s now. The Seminoles have 6 consecutive games before the next bye week (10/25), including the massive game against Miami, so they will need everyone healthy and all hands on deck.
